Not everyone knows that the famous writer and poet Taras Shevchenko was closely connected not only with literature, but also with painting. Indeed, at the beginning of his journey in art, he was seen precisely as an artist, thanks to which he was sent to study in Russia.

In 1842, after the creation of the poem “Katerina”, Taras Shevchenko painted an oil painting, performing it in the style of realism, following the same plot, choosing a scene that goes right after the farewell of the main character with her lover - “Muscovite”. In fact, the “Katerina” of 1842 is an author’s illustration of the poem, but is also full of various assumptions of various symbols (Katerina, as the image of Ukraine, a Russian soldier, like the Russian Empire, a peasant, as freedom in the distant past).

What happens in the picture, if we turn to what a person sees who knows nothing about the history of the Ukrainian people, or about the work of Taras Shevchenko?

Depicts a pretty-looking girl with her head bowed down the dusty road with her bare feet. She is wearing traditional Ukrainian clothes: a white shirt with a red bow, a long skirt that does not reach twenty ankles about twenty centimeters, a wreath with a ribbon similar in color to her scarlet apron. Her, this sad dark-haired girl, judging by the name of the picture, her name is Katerina.

On the same dusty road under a tree sits a man with his arms and legs crossed. He is about 40-50 years old. A shadow from a wide-brimmed straw hat falls on his face; however, it is clear that this man is a mustache, and his hair is black as tar. But his linen clothes, contrasting with dark skin, are white.

A little far away on a rearing horse sits a soldier of the Russian Empire - the same "Muscovite". Obviously, he is going to leave, therefore, despite the detail, his figure is somewhat vague.

The background is a traditional landscape, but hidden in fog. A dusty mill and a plain, and more - nothing at all.
