Half-turned, with an open folio in his hands, one of the five Sibyls appears to the visitors of the famous Sistine Chapel - Libyan. Like each of them, the Libyan Sibyl also carries a spiritual purpose, being the embodiment of beauty, wisdom and the eternal movement of all living and existing, indispensable, according to the plan of the Creator.
Endowed with the Italian genius Michelangelo with special plasticity and peculiar grace, despite its rather powerful forms, Sibyl as if wants to convey something to a modern person, turning to him with a book, where, of course, the Word of God is said. Sibyl, that in the translation of God's will, was originally a wandering prophetess that could predict the fate of everyone and tell them what awaits them in the near future.
At the same time, the Libyan Sibyl was very intolerant of all kinds of idols and tirelessly urged people to stop serving pagan gods. The ancient primary sources, in which the sybil is mentioned, say that she received her nickname, since she came from Libya, called the Latins by Africa, and the Turks by Barbarian. That she was rather black, of medium height and in her hand was invariably present a branch of an olive tree.
Although the fresco by Michelangelo, Sibyl is a white woman. there is reason to believe that at the time the Italian master posed for the image of the Sibyls. One way or another, the side part of the ceiling of the chapel is decorated with a European-style woman with golden hair.
It is located next to the prophet Daniel and is surrounded by young cherubs. Like the other four Sibyls, the Libyan one, made by Michelangelo in 1511, perfectly fits into the grand ensemble of priceless works of the Sistine Chapel.
