Description of the painting by Sandro Botticelli "Slander"

If you listen to the statements of George Vasari, the culprit of the picture, written by Sandro Botticelli, was his friend Antonio Seni, who advised to recreate the lost images.

The plot of the work was the lost work of the Greek artist Appeles. This work cannot be simply hung on the wall. She needs to be admired as a jewel.

In the original, Apelles, who was a court painter, was accused of treason. Allegedly, he betrayed the Egyptian king Ptolemy IV. After him in memory of the terrible dungeons of the prison, in order to somehow restore himself from injustice, the Greek artist painted a picture of Slander. And Botticelli created a remake of this picture.

In the picture, the throne with the seated king Midas with donkey ears, which Apollo endowed him because of the unfair announcement of the winner. In fact, he won the competition, the king awarded the victory to another. So he was offended.

On both sides of the king are images of Suspicion and Ignorance. They whisper something in the king’s ears, and he listens carefully to them, with his eyes closed. And at the same time, asks him to help an ugly man in a black robe called Malice, who held out his left hand to the king.

Malice drags to King Slander. King Midas listens to any libel because he directs the thoughts of King Malice. Two characters captured the hair of Slander and try to braid her braids. These two characters are Envy and Falsehood. Outwardly beautiful, but insidious, they want symbols of beauty: with white ribbons and roses, they identify themselves in this way with purity.

In the meantime, Slander clutched her dead grip on the deceived, naked in order to be understood, and the Victim, praying for mercy, in the form of a young man. But all in vain. On the left, the artist depicted a nude named Truth, the recognition of which was given only to Repentance, the old woman - a crying woman.

In fact, this picture has remained a mystery to many generations. No one knows the true reason for writing this picture by the master.
