Sandro Botticelli is a well-known Italian Renaissance painter who devoted his work mainly to the creation of spiritual and religious paintings. The painting "St. Sebastian", allegedly created in 1473, is one of the best artworks created by the artist. The first time she saw the light in 1474, the canvas was exhibited in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Florence.

St. Sebastian, according to legend, lived during the highest dawn of persecution of Christians, he was the commander of the Praetorian army of the emperor himself and secretly professed a new forbidden faith. After discovering his penchant for Christianity, Sebastian was tied to a pillar and shot from a bow by his own soldiers.

Despite the fact that he was from a wealthy family, no one stood up for him, and only one compassionate woman showed mercy and, picking up the wounded Sebastian, left him as a native. After the Christian recovered, this woman tried to persuade him to leave the city, but Sebastian decided that he would uphold his faith, even if he had to pay his life for it.

Speaking in front of the imperial palace in defense of his new faith, Sebastian angered the emperor so much that he gave the order for his second execution. The innocent martyr was executed and subsequently became one of the most revered saints - the patrons whom all the afflicted prayed to. For some time, plague patients considered Saint Sebastian to be their personal intercessor. Archers and hunters also sought the patronage of the saint.

Botticelli portrayed the saint in a certain thoughtfulness standing at the pillar, his arms crossed behind his back, there is a feeling that the martyr had not at all prepared for death, but was thinking about some important and urgent matter. Several arrows are stuck into his body, but it seems as if the young man did not notice them at all. Behind him, a completely peaceful landscape opens, which the saint will soon lose, but this does not bother him at all.

The painting soon became the pride of all of Florence, glorifying the name of the artist.
