Vasily Vereshchagin is a famous Russian artist whose talented genius revealed himself in the second half of the 19th century after writing a series of paintings on his journey as an assistant to the Turkestan governor in Central Asia.

The world political situation of that time left much to be desired, there were endless wars, both with Ottoman Turkey and in the expanses of Turkestan, blood was pouring, innocent soldiers were dying, hundreds sent to certain death. Seeing the horror of the current situation, the artist decides to write several paintings that would appeal to people for peace, one of the conceived paintings is "Mortally Wounded." Oddly enough, the exact date of writing the picture is known - 1783, as well as those feelings that prompted the artist to take up the brush.

At the top of the canvas, right near the frame, Vereshchagin wrote the following - “Brothers killed ... killed!”, With these words conveying the cry of the soul, the main character of the picture - a wounded soldier running from the battlefield. The man in the picture is in despair, which cannot be overlooked by his face distorted by horror and the painful effort with which he closes with both hands a wound gaping in his chest at the very heart.

The soldier’s gun remained thrown behind, he does not pay attention to it, his life hangs in the balance and only this is important. His comrades are dead, their blood has already soaked the hot sand, very soon the turn will come for this man, who is struggling to preserve his only wealth - life.

Gunpowder smoke obscures the background of the picture, through which the viewer sees an ongoing siege of the fortress, but for this desperate running man it's all over, he will no longer fight, and will not live very soon. Such is the main idea of this picture - to show all the horror of impending death and to cause the viewer, above all a high-ranking, the desire to end all wars and conflicts.
