The icon, painted back in 1885 by Vrubel, on the one hand corresponds to all the Orthodox canons of iconography, which strictly enough limit the space provided for the artist for imagination, on the other hand, it is unusual and original within these limits.
Instead of almost inanimate faces sustained in a single strict style, living human eyes look from her - not suffering, not understanding, not grieving, not looking into the very soul and burning it to the bottom, but ordinary. Recalling that Christ with the Virgin is not only God and the Holy Virgin, but also people - at the same time something immensely large and immensely small. In the icon there is usually realism unusual for icons, a hint of some knowledge behind the face of the Virgin.
However, the symbolism of the icon is fully consistent with the charters. So the throne on which the Mother of God sits means greatness and regality (this image began to be used back in Byzantium, in the 11th-12th centuries), a scarlet cloak - suffering, blood and greatness.
Three stars, golden on the face of the Mother of God, remind us that the triune God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and at the same time that the Mother of God remained a virgin before, after, and during Christmas. Greek letters are on her halo - an abbreviation of the words “Mother of God”, these letters can be found on any icon. On the halo of Christ is an easily recognizable cross, reminiscent of what fate awaits a baby sitting on his mother’s lap. His right hand is folded into two fingers - blessing, forgiveness and tranquility, his left hand rests on a scroll, which means that God is omniscient.
At the same time, the icon and the picture are invested in it more than they usually invest in icons, and it was created by Vrubel even at that time when he was an unknown student and hired him for painting only because they were looking for someone who couldn’t be paid too much.
1200 - for a poor student artist working as a tutor, it was a lot of money. For the project manager, however, it is too small an estimate for which no one to be hired should be hired.
