For many years, Tolstoy and Repin had a tender, warm friendship, despite the fact that they did not agree on many issues and often argued heatedly, causing others to feel that they were quarreling. In fact, when confronted by the points of view, friends found a common solution, got to know each other better, or simply practiced wit, thus entertaining each other.

“Portrait of Tolstoy” is one of many of his portraits painted by Repin. It is natural for any artist to write loved ones, and Repin was no exception. He portrayed Tolstoy in an armchair, at the time of reading, relaxed thoughtfulness. Most likely, having seen an interesting pose, which, in his opinion, expressed the inner essence of the writer, Repin asked him to accept it again, in order to sketch it and keep it for centuries.

In the picture, Tolstoy sits in an armchair, one hand lies on the armrest, in the second he holds a small book. He is dressed in a black blouse, intercepted on the belt with a belt - against her will, she is associated with the clothes of the priest. A thick white beard lies on Tolstoy’s chest. The eyes look a little away from the viewer - the writer has just raised them from the book, and a question shines in them, reflecting on which he interrupted the reading.

Perhaps at that moment when his pose was moving and lively, and no one had thought about the painting yet, he asked Repin a question, but his thoughtfulness was not allowed in the portrait, it was enclosed inside. The background of the picture is blurry, it does not play a role in the fate of the shown personality - it can be a garden, a living room, or a veranda, which, as unnecessary, Repin simply did not show.

Only Repin was able to write Tolstoy in this way. With undoubted respect, attention to his personality, with the drawing of details - to the smallest hair in a beard. So you can write only a friend, but not a casual acquaintance and customer. And the question that shines in Tolstoy's deep-set eyes may have found an answer from Repin.
